Sometimes it’s fast and sometimes it’s slow, but you have to respond – or not, but choosing not to decide is a choice in and of itself.I never felt rushed during big moments, but I knew I had to be decisive – and so did the characters I was controlling. You’ll have to make these choices quickly, too, because you’re on a timer. How well you do as Carter affects what happens to the ship, but the decisions you make as Jara affect Carter if something goes wrong. ![]() ![]() In one early scene, Carter is out on the ship’s hull repairing a critical system, while Jara is on the bridge. Jara and Carter rarely directly interact with one another but both of them play important roles in the story, and Dramatic Labs does a good job showing how the decisions made by one of them can impact the other. It gives you a better idea of the stakes for everyone aboard – problems apply to more than the folks on the bridge, who knew! – and makes scenarios more exciting. Other times it means rerouting power to a critical system or taking a spacewalk to repair the Resolute. Sometimes, that means giving orders from the bridge or leading an away team. The perspective effectively bounces between Jara and Carter depending on the situation. ![]() ![]() ![]() “There's so much to like in this trilogy. “ surprising and romantic finale.” - Kirkus Reviews on Emerald Green “This reader only has two complaints: (1) the book ended, and (2) waiting for Emerald Green is already straining her patience!” - VOYA on Sapphire Blue “Hilarious and delightful.” - School Library Journal on Sapphire Blue “Adventure, humor, and mystery all have satisfying roles here.” - Booklist, starred review on Ruby Red “Humorous, romantic and suspenseful, the plot is fast-paced and impossible to put down.” - Justine magazine on Ruby Red Will leave readers anticipating the publication of the next installment, Sapphire Blue.” - The New York Times Book Review on Ruby Red A smart twist at the end will make readers eager to see what the future holds for the pair and what new plot surprises will be conjured up in the planned trilogy.” - Booklist “Teen romance readers will enjoy the clever writing and repartee between Liv and her love interest, Henry. The series is a rif on Harry Potter – if Harry Potter went to college in the US, had a lot of sex (both magical and mundane), and lived in a more morally ambiguous world. It’s a crazysauce series – I gobbled it up, but I also have reservations about it, especially book 3 (there’s non-consensual dream sex in it and not enough consequences for the offender, imo). ![]() Since others have mentioned SF/F books, I’ll mention Cecilia Tan’s Magic University series, especially the 4th and final one (The Poet and the Prophecy) – with a few caveats. ![]() ![]() What matters is how well you do your living.
